Bromham BioGas

Moorfields were appointed as Joint Administrators over Bromham Biogas Limited, operators of a large-scale biomethane and renewable energy facility based at Bromham House Farm.

The plant, which commenced operations in 2017, converts agricultural waste such as cattle muck, maize, and rye into biomethane gas and electricity supplied to the national grids. At full capacity, the facility produced approximately 35 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of biomethane annually and generated electricity through a combined heat and power (CHP) unit capable of supplying energy to around 300 homes. However, despite its technical capabilities, the company faced significant financial pressures and was placed into administration in November 2024.

Objectives

  • Stabilise operations and safeguard valuable renewable energy assets.
  • Market the business and assets for sale to suitable investors or operators.
  • Preserve and protect renewable accreditations, including gas-to-grid and CHP certifications.
  • Maximise realisations for creditors through an open, competitive sales process.
  • Engage with stakeholders, including local authorities and energy regulators, to maintain compliance and community transparency.

Moorfields’ Actions

  • Conducted a full operational assessment of the facility’s biomethane and CHP systems.
  • Engaged professional agents to market the business and its assets, highlighting its established renewable energy accreditations and strong infrastructure.
  • Managed the sale process for the plant, land, and associated assets, inviting offers from energy sector investors and operators.
  • Worked to protect environmental and operational compliance, ensuring ongoing safety and maintenance at the site during the marketing period.
  • Actively engaged with local and national stakeholders, addressing community concerns and maintaining open communication throughout the process.

Results

  • The business and its renewable energy assets were formally marketed for sale, attracting significant industry interest.
  • The facility’s value and accreditations were preserved during administration.
  • Moorfields provided a clear and compliant framework for prospective buyers, facilitating the continuation of renewable energy production at the site.
  • The process showcased Moorfields’ capability in complex energy and infrastructure administrations, balancing environmental, regulatory, and stakeholder considerations.
